Mobile Bay Anime Fest 2020 canceled due to updated COVID-19 guidelines

For Immediate Release – March 30, 2020

Mobile Bay Anime Festival has been canceled for 2020 due to President Trump’s social distancing guidelines (recently extended until April 30) and an abundance of caution for our attendees, guests, vendors, artists, and volunteers in regards to COVID-19. We have been monitoring the local and national news and relevant state health department updates, speaking with officials at the Daphne Civic Center, and watching and reading all media outlets in regards to the most up-to-date COVID-19 information.

Alabama Public Health released a new order on March 27 requiring the closure of certain “non-essential” businesses in Alabama. This order went into effect on March 28 at 5 p.m. The order defined affected businesses and activities that include entertainment venues, athletic facilities, close-contact service providers, and retail stores. State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris said, “Everyone plays a critical role in protecting others and is encouraged to spend as much time as possible at home to prevent an increase in new infections.”

“Please understand that no decision like this is made lightly, but know it’s being done for the greater good of not only everyone involved with the event, but for the community at large,” said AVC Conventions co-owner Greg Hanks. As of now, there is not a rescheduled date for this year. Refunds will begin to be processed immediately.

In the coming days and weeks, please be cognizant of your neighbors, what is going on around you, and the information that is being released about COVID-19.
